Our multi day trip this season is to experience The History & Art of Glasgow & Edinburgh. In Glasgow we will stay three nights in a central hotel, within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops. Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city and once the country’s industrial capital, has been reborn as a city of culture whilst retaining its grand Victorian architecture built with the wealth of merchants and industrialists. In 1990 it was nominated European City of Culture.

Visits are planned to St. Mungo’s Cathedral and to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery/Museum containing works by Rembrandt, Titian and French Impressionists as well as the Scottish Colourists and The Glasgow Boys. A highlight of Glasgow is the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, architect, furniture designer and painter, whose impressive works, together with those of his wife, Margaret Macdonald, are to be seen on our visit to Hill House and the Hunterian Museum.  We are also fortunate to start our trip  with a welcome dinner at the famous “Mackintosh at the Willow”.

We move to Edinburgh by coach and will again be centrally located for the next two nights. There will be opportunities to view the Castle and the Royal Mile going down to the Palace of Holyrood house, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland and the Scottish Parliament. We will visit the National Gallery of Scotland, home to Scotland’s greatest collection of European paintings and sculpture from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionist eras. A visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia with a Blue Badge guide is also included as well as to Dalmeny House (belonging to one of Scotland’s oldest families) or to a similar stately home.
